Pennies For Peace

We are participating in a program called Pennies For Peace. This program helps children in Pakistan and Afghanistan build schools and buy school supplies. The children are in areas so poor that they were teaching themselves outside in the dirt, sometimes in the freezing cold! We are trying to collect as many pennies as possible to help these kids. Please bring in your pennies. Even one penny helps a lot! Bring in your pennies to our room or the cafeteria. Thank you!

Thank you!

I just wanted to thank all of my wonderful second grade students and their families for all of the comforting thoughts and caring words with the loss of my grandmother. I also want to thank you for the beautiful flowers. That was so nice of you and I really appreciate your kindness. Thank you all!

Pumpkin Sink/Float Activity

We did a sink or float activity with different fruits/vegetables. We guessed whether each item would sink or float first and then tossed them into a bucket of water.

First was a squash:

The squash floated!

Next, we tried a carrot:

The carrot sank!

Third, we threw in an apple:

The apple floated!

The fourth thing we tried was an eggplant:

The eggplant floated!

The next thing was a banana:

The banana floated!

We also used a potato:

The potato sank!

Last, we used a pumpkin in our activity:
Most of us thought the pumpkin would sink, but it floated!

Pumpkin Seeds

We had four pumpkins and four groups. Each group counted the seeds in their pumpkin. This picture shows how many seeds each group had in their pumpkin. Altogether we had 2,270 seeds!!!

Pumpkin Day

We spent a few days learning all about pumpkins. We learned about how pumpkins grow and even taught our kindergarten friends in Miss Bennett's class.
We also divided into four groups. Each group got a pumpkin. We found the circumference and weight of each pumpkin. Then we counted the seeds in our pumpkin.
We also did a sink and float activity with a pumpkin and a few other vegetables and fruits.
